Why Study Luke?

Of all four Gospels, only Luke is known as “The Gospel of Mercy.” And it is Luke that the Church draws from in a special way during this Extraordinary Jubilee Year.

Of the 28 parables in the Gospel of Luke, 15 of them are found in Luke alone. These include such beloved parables as the Prodigal Son, the Lost Sheep, and the Good Samaritan – all of which reveal with great power and tenderness the mercy of God.

One of the most striking parables that Jesus ever told is the parable of the Prodigal Son. It is remarkable for the image it gives us of the Divine Mercy—God as the father of a wayward child, who rushes out to meet him while he is still far off.

Luke is a Gospel addressed to the Gentiles, to all men and women of goodwill who are seeking God. The Church draw from it in a special way during this Extraordinary Jubilee. There is no better time to discover Luke: The Gospel of Mercy than during this Holy Year.

But the parable of the Prodigal Son is remarkable for another reason: It is found only in the Gospel of Luke.

We invite you to immerse yourself in these parables, to uncover God’s Mercy in His own words, and to see how His Mercy is still active in the world today.
